Personal profile
Biography
Dr. Hannah Gavin (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Providence College. She earned a Ph.D. in Life Sciences from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and has since held academic positions at MIT, Harvard University, and Tufts University. She appreciates the synergy between research and teaching, and brings ample enthusiasm for both to her role at Providence College.
In her research lab at PC, a dedicated group of undergraduates explore the interplay among bacteria, viruses (bacteriophages), and genetics using collections of microbes isolated from human-derived samples. The Gavin Group is also active in establishing evidence-based methods for research best practices. Dr. Gavin particularly loves identifying and experimentally addressing untested assumptions in the field of microbiology.
Dr. Gavin's dedication to STEM education has been recognized with several teaching awards. At PC, she teaches microbe-centric courses including the Microbiolgy for Health Professions (HSC252) courses that are required for Nursing and Health Sciences majors.
