Anthony K Jensen

Since receiving my doctorate from Emory University (2006), I have held appointments at Xavier University (2006-9), the City University of New York (2009-12), and Providence College (2012—), where I was made full professor of philosophy in 2017. I have also held visiting research positions at the Alexander von Humboldt Universität of Berlin (2010-12), the Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen (2012), and the directorship of the Providence College program in Rome (2017-18). I have received fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, and the Fulbright Foundation. I was named the 2020 Providence College Outstanding Scholar of the Year. In 2026, I will be a Visiting Fellow of Cambridge University, at Clare Hall College.

My current research traces the development of the notion of ‘Will’ from Goethe, Schelling, and Schopenhauer, through a number of minor Schopenhauerian figures, up to Nietzsche, and involves European philosophical traditions in metaphysics, philosophy of history, epistemology, and aesthetics. My publications includes several monographs and edited volumes that have contributed to the understanding of 19^th Century German philosophy, especially the figure of Nietzsche. Among them are “The Philosophy of Will: A Reexamination of Late Modern German Philosophy” (Routledge, 2025), “An Interpretation of Nietzsche’s On the Uses and Disadvantage of History for Life” (Routledge, 2016), and “Nietzsche’s Philosophy of History” (Cambridge University Press, 2013). I co-edited, with Carlotta Santini, “The Re-Encountered Shadow: Nietzsche on Memory and History” (DeGruyter, 2021), and, with Helmut Heit, “Nietzsche as a Scholar of Antiquity” (Bloomsbury, 2014). In addition, I have written more than sixty articles, chapters, translations, reviews, and encyclopedia articles, and presented more than seventy lectures around the globe. My work has been translated into French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Chinese.
