Biography

Dr. Aishah Scott is an Assistant Professor of Health Sciences and Black Studies at Providence College, where she examines the intersections of race, medicine, and public health in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

She earned her Ph.D. in History from Stony Brook University in 2019, with research focused on the history of medicine and African American experiences in the United States. Prior to joining Providence College in 2021, Dr. Scott was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for African American Urban Studies and the Economy.

Dr. Scott’s forthcoming book manuscript, Respectability Can’t Save You: The AIDS Epidemic in Urban Black America, is under contract with Johns Hopkins University Press. Her recent publications include “Erased by Respectability: The Intersections of AIDS, Race, and Gender in Black America” in Women, Gender, and Families of Color Journal and “Converging Crises: HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and the Politics of Respectability” in the Journal of the Conference on Faith and History. Her scholarship bridges history, health policy, and Black Studies, addressing themes of medical racism, public health inequities, and community-based resistance.

An invited speaker at institutions such as Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, and Brandeis University, Dr. Scott frequently engages public audiences on closing gaps in health equity. Her expertise has been featured in media outlets including Marketplace, Pittsburgh NPR (WESA), and The Medical Record Podcast.
